Data Governance and Metadata Management are two closely associated Data Management Capabilities which organizations must address in order to truly turn their data into Information Assets. Without a complete understanding of the data upon which an organization relies, decisions about how it should be managed and used for competitive advantage, new product development, target marketing, risk management, financial reporting and regulatory compliance will be based more on “instinct” than on “facts”. And, without formal accountabilities and processes which build upon that understanding and define how new data is introduced within the organization, how “quality” is to be measured, how privacy guidelines are applied, and how data can be used and who is able to use it, data is treated as a “necessary evil” rather than one of the most valuable assets that most modern organizations possess.

In this white paper, we present an integrated data governance and metadata management philosophy for organizations to consider when they are evaluating their current data management practices and capabilities.

Three major prerequisites for successful implementation of this philosophy are:

  1. Commitment from the organization’s senior management that data is strategic to the organization’s long-term success;
  2. A knowledge repository which both business people and technology people utilize to understand the current state of their data and contribute new knowledge as it is obtained; and
  3. A willingness throughout the organization to treat data and the information describing it as an asset every bit as valuable as currency.

There will, no doubt, also be business-as-usual and other tactical considerations inherent in running a business and servicing customers that must be addressed while the components of this strategic data management program are put into place. The philosophy presented enables an organization to leverage the knowledge acquired through its tactical efforts as part of building for the future.
