EMC XtremIO solutions use a traditional SAN controller design employed for block storage. The architecture centers on controllers deployed in an active/active configuration, opting for maximum performance, balancing workload during normal operation but operating in a degraded mode in the event of a failure. Unlike traditional controller-based solutions, XtremIO’s architecture (as of Q4 2013) allows for up to four systems (eight controllers), with the intent to increase the maximum number in the future.

This document provides an overview of EMC’s XtremIO architecture as it compares to SolidFire. Not intended to be exhaustive, this overview covers select elements where the solutions differ and presents their impact to overall suitability for data center needs.
