This Case Study is a story of data discovery and the pioneering efforts to transform the data assets of American Fidelity Assurance (AFA) into tangible business value. “We had a vision,” said Mark Nance, the Chief Data Officer at American Fidelity. “Our organization had a desire to actually start transforming our data. A group of us decided to take that on with ASG Technologies’ help.”

The ability to leverage quality data is a key component of delivering market success in the modern business world. Mark Nance, along with Kim Fisher, CIO; Diana Bittle, VP Software Solutions; and Andy Moore, AVP Enterprise Information Management understood this and began a Data Intelligence program at American Fidelity to better
utilize their data assets throughout the enterprise.

Achieving data-driven business results is not a fairy tale; it’s not a story dreamed up by data professionals. The data that exists within the 10s, 100s, or even 1,000s of applications, platforms, systems, and source code is not intelligent until it can be leveraged. Such intelligence begins with the ability to trace enterprise data flows with
a reliable map of those flows; such intelligence requires data lineage.

Data Intelligence is about providing a GPS into the application stack and data streams of the enterprise – not just the data that everyone uses on a daily basis, but the data that is unknown, ostensibly retired or forgotten about, shared between business lines, existing in legacy code or disparate databases, and data that ultimately still drives
business decisions.
