States, counties and municipalities have historically relied on local brick-and-mortar businesses to collect retail sales taxes. These businesses collected the sales tax from their customers, and then remitted the tax proceeds to their local sales tax jurisdiction. It was a straightforward process, and no one much quarreled with who owed the taxes and who would receive them. That straightforward proposition became complex with the rise of thousands of catalog merchants in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Catalog merchants sold to consumers nationwide, who began to shift their purchases away from local brick-and-mortar merchants. This reduced revenue to local sales tax jurisdictions because catalog companies rarely collected sales taxes from their customers. Download this White Paper for more information.

In the modern age, customers are in control of when, where, and how they consume information. In this environment, customer-focused companies strive to make their content available to an ever-growing number of connected users and devices on a much larger scale than ever before, and to gather as much data and insight from these interactions as possible. To achieve this securely, companies need identity and access management (IAM) platforms that are adaptable, scalable, responsive, and high velocity— not typical characteristics of employee-facing IAM, but all too typical of other systems of engagement. This species of solution is worthy of a unique name: identity relationship management (IRM).

When driving any major change within an organization, strategy and execution are intrinsic to a project’s success. Nevertheless, closing the gap between strategy and execution remains a challenge for many organizations, as explored in a recent Process Excellence Network report: “Shift Business Excellence Into High Gear: Drive Strategic Performance Through Process Excellence.” Companies tend to focus more on execution than strategy for quick results, instead of taking the time needed to understand the parts that make up the whole, so the right execution plan can be put in place to deliver the best outcomes. A large part of closing this gap is understanding that business operations don’t fit neatly within the traditional organizational hierarchy. Business processes are often messy, collaborative efforts that span people, departments and systems, making them difficult to manage within a hierarchical structure. Though IP telephony has been available commercially since the mid ‘90s, it remains an emerging technology for many organizations. Only about 28% of companies have moved all endpoints (handsets, softphones, audio bridges) to IP, according to Nemertes’ research data. The rest of organizations are either in the process of migrating fully to IP, stuck in a hybrid rollout requiring them to manage typically multiple TDM and IP providers, or firmly planted in TDM. This report reviews the issues and benefits associated with moving to an all-IP environment, based on interviews with IT professionals who have moved to all IP or are in the process of doing so.

Virtualization was supposed to be the disruptive technology that saved IT. The cost savings from consolidation and the ease at which applications can be deployed promised to vastly improve delivery of IT services, free up IT staff to work on other projects, and not strain budgets. Unfortunately, lack of insight into IT resource status in highly virtualized environments and the complexity of the interactions between server, storage, and network elements have added to IT staff manual workloads and led most companies to dedicate too much time to operations and not enough time to innovation. This basically negates the major benefits of virtualization.
