No one in today’s highly connected world is exempt from security threats like phishing, ransomware, or denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. Certainly not Google. Google operates seven services with more than one billion active users each (including Google Search, YouTube, Maps, and Gmail). We see every type of attack, bad software, and bad actors—multiple times a day—and we’re proud of what our people, processes, and technology do to stop them. Google has published more than 160 academic research papers on computer security, privacy, and abuse prevention and has privately warned other software companies of weaknesses discovered in their systems. Within Google, we enforce a zero-trust security model, which monitors every device on the internal network.

HP, a $120 billion company with five major business lines and an employee base of more than 300,000 people, faces many of the same IT challenges as other global enterprises at hyperscale: it must accommodate ever-increasing demands for business services without allowing its IT costs to spiral out of control. So the company embraced a solution from its own hardware portfolio: HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage, modern Tier-1 storage for mission-critical IT-as-a-Service (ITaaS) and cloud environments. And the benefits of implementing this storage solution have been substantial, including increased storage capacity and density, as well as more agile, responsive IT services that better meet HP’s business needs.

Cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction. At the time this definition was published, “cloud” was already part of industry parlance, and was beginning to take root in the general lexicon. Additionally, global business spending for infrastructure and services related to the cloud had topped $78 billion. This year, enterprise spending on the cloud will reach an estimated $174 billion, and is expected to climb to $235 billion by 2017.2 Inevitably, as both business IT and consumer mindsets evolve toward the cloud in coming years, we will continue to witness dramatic growth in IT products in some areas, and significant reductions in other areas—resulting in a reshaping of the industry as a whole.

The year 2011 ended with a staggering 5.9 billion mobile phone subscriptions, especially significant considering that the total world population is around 7.011 billion. Of course, a direct comparison is not fair since many people have multiple subscriptions, but it represents a window into the pervasiveness of these devices and how they are an integral part of people’s lives today. For enterprises, this also represents the impending end to the old computing era and the emergence of the mobile worker. Enabling mobility in the workplace is a top-of-mind goal for decision-makers within every organization. This necessity is brought about by the consumerization of IT and the requirement to develop policies to manage the “bring-your-own-device” (BYOD) trend.

The data integration tool market was worth approximately $2.8 billion in constant currency at the end of 2015, an increase of 10.5% from the end of 2014. The discipline of data integration comprises the practices, architectural techniques and tools that ingest, transform, combine and provision data across the spectrum of information types in the enterprise and beyond — to meet the data consumption requirements of all applications and business processes. The biggest changes in the market from 2015 are the increased demand for data virtualization, the growing use of data integration tools to combine "data lakes" with existing integration solutions, and the overall expectation that data integration will become cloud- and on-premises-agnostic.

NoSQL databases are now commonly used to provide a scalable system to store, retrieve and analyze large amounts of data. Most NoSQL databases are designed to automatically partition data and workloads across multiple servers to enable easier, more cost-effective expansion of data stores than the single server/scale up approach of traditional relational databases. Public cloud infrastructure should provide an effective host platform for NoSQL databases given its horizontal scalability, on-demand capacity, configuration flexibility and metered billing; however, the performance of virtualized public cloud services can suffer relative to bare-metal offerings in I/O intensive use cases. Benchmark tests comparing latency and throughput of operating a high-performance in-memory (flash-optimized), key value store NoSQL database on popular virtualized public cloud services and an automated bare-metal platform show performance advantages of bare-metal over virtualized public cloud, further quant

The leadership of a new, marquee pharma manufacturer approached KPMG with a paradox: It was certainly marquee, but not new. As the highly publicized spin-off of a global health services conglomerate, the company began life with $18 billion in annual revenues, an established product pipeline and instant membership in the S&P 100. Reliant on the back-office functions of its parent, it needed to quickly acquire the back-office sinews of a truly stand-alone company: ERP systems and core processes for finance, operations and human resources. During an intensive three-year engagement, KPMG brought the vision of the company’s leaders to life, working towards a target operating model through the disciplined implementation of new systems, processes, training and staffing. The multidisciplinary approach eventually touched the lives of every one of the company’s 21,000 employees, in 170 countries. And as KPMG’s delivered tangible results, something intangible emerged – a new company culture, inde
