Data management is becoming more and more central to the business model of enterprises. The time when data was looked at as little more than the byproduct of automation is long gone, and today we see enterprises vigorously engaged in trying to unlock maximum value from their data, even to the extent of directly monetizing it. Yet, many of these efforts are hampered by immature data governance and management practices stemming from a legacy that did not pay much attention to data. Part of this problem is a failure to understand that there are different types of data, and each type of data has its own special characteristics, challenges and concerns. Reference data is a special type of data. It is essentially codes whose basic job is to turn other data into meaningful business information and to provide an informational context for the wider world in which the enterprise functions. This paper discusses the challenges associated with implementing a reference data management solution and the essential components of any vision for the governance and management of reference data. It covers the following topics in some detail: · What is reference data? · Why is reference data management important? · What are the challenges of reference data management? · What are some best practices for the governance and management of reference data? · What capabilities should you look for in a reference data solution?

Big Data will give businesses new insights and help improve operations. With these new tools come questions about how to use them. But your mechanic knows more about fixing a transmission than developing a Hadoop cluster, and similar concerns hold true for larger enterprises. Businesses everywhere are looking for guidance.

Today’s CIOs no longer just oversee technology. They are now key strategists who guide their organizations and give them the tools they need to stay competitive. A study by Forbes Research stated that five years ago, a CIO’s most critical skill was deploying technology. Now, the #1 way that CIOs provide value is by contributing to the corporate strategy, so they can advance business objectives and drive revenue.1 In particular, CEOs rely on the CIO for guidance around digital transformation. Organizations must transform how they operate and take advantage of new technologies to better engage customers and employees. Digital transformation falls squarely on the shoulders of IT leaders. CIOs are under pressure to drive transformation – overcoming barriers such as cultures that are resistant to change, employees who want to upload files anywhere, and increased concerns about data security. CEOs also expect CIOs to achieve results now. The longer you wait, the more likely you will fall beh

Digital information has quickly become the lifeblood of business success, enabling firms to become more operationally efficient and to better serve their customers. As companies seek to harness their data in new ways, the infrastructure that houses that data can falter under the strain. In response, new innovations have emerged to help address the concerns of managing and protecting these increasingly important data capacities. While some vendors focus innovation development on software alone and allow the hardware to remain commodity, Dell Technologies is delivering some impressive hardware innovation with Isilon’s next generation hardware to complement its software’s disruptive capabilities.

Today’s business climate demands that corporations have a flexible computing infrastructure. Because of the agility it provides, cloud computing is garnering interest in many organisations. As they look at such possible deployments, however, some CIOs become hamstrung by security concerns. They feel that the traditional method of securing information in premises-based systems is the best way. While that option worked for many years, the threat landscape today is more diverse and more potentially damaging than ever before.
