NoSQL database management systems give us the opportunity to store our data according to more than one data storage model, but our entity-relationship data modeling notations are stuck in SQL land. Is there any need to model schema-less databases, and is it even possible? In this short white paper, Ted Hills examines these questions in light of a recent paper from MarkLogic on the hybrid data model.

The growth of NoSQL data storage solutions have revolutionized the way enterprises are dealing with their data. The older, relational platforms are still being utilized by most organizations, while the implementation of varying NoSQL platforms including Key-Value, Wide Column, Document, Graph, and Hybrid data stores are increasing at faster rates than ever seen before. Such implementations are causing enterprises to revise their Data Management procedures across-the-board from governance to analytics, metadata management to software development, data modeling to regulation and compliance. The time-honored techniques for data modeling are being rewritten, reworked, and modified in a multitude of different ways, often wholly dependent on the NoSQL platform under development. The research report analyzes a 2015 DATAVERSITY® survey titled “Modeling NoSQL.” The survey examined a number of crucial issues within the NoSQL world today, with focus on data modeling in particular.

The age of Big Data is upon us. Storage costs are going down, and data analytics is becoming more capable and more user-friendly. Even your auto mechanic will be storing a petabyte of data soon. Big Data will give businesses new insights and help improve operations. With these new tools come questions about how to use them. But your mechanic knows more about fixing a transmission than developing a Hadoop cluster, and similar concerns hold true for larger enterprises. Businesses everywhere are looking for guidance.

As businesses plunge into the digital future, no asset will have a greater impact on success than data. The ability to collect, harness, analyze, protect, and manage data will determine which businesses disrupt their industries, and which are disrupted; which businesses thrive, and which disappear. But traditional storage solutions are not designed to optimally handle such a critical business asset. Instead, businesses need to adopt an all-flash data center. In their new role as strategic business enablers, IT leaders have the responsibility to ensure that their businesses are protected, by investing in flexible, future-proof flash storage solutions. The right flash solution can deliver on critical business needs for agility, rapid growth, speed-to-market, data protection, application performance, and cost-effectiveness—while minimizing the maintenance and administration burden.

Today’s data centers are expected to deploy, manage, and report on different tiers of business applications, databases, virtual workloads, home directories, and file sharing simultaneously. They also need to co-locate multiple systems while sharing power and energy. This is true for large as well as small environments. The trend in modern IT is to consolidate as much as possible to minimize cost and maximize efficiency of data centers and branch offices. HPE 3PAR StoreServ is highly efficient, flash-optimized storage engineered for the true convergence of block, file, and object access to help consolidate diverse workloads efficiently. HPE 3PAR OS and converged controllers incorporate multiprotocol support into the heart of the system architecture

Modern storage arrays can’t compete on price without a range of data reduction technologies that help reduce the overall total cost of ownership of external storage. Unfortunately, there is no one single data reduction technology that fits all data types and we see savings being made with both data deduplication and compression, depending on the workload. Typically, OLTP-type data (databases) work well with compression and can achieve between 2:1 and 3:1 reduction, depending on the data itself. Deduplication works well with large volumes of repeated data like virtual machines or virtual desktops, where many instances or images are based off a similar “gold” master.

Global data deduplication provides important benefits over traditional deduplication processes because it removes redundant data through entire enterprises, not just single devices. Global deduplication increases the data deduplication ratio—the size of the original data measured against the size of the data store after redundancies are removed. This helps reduce the amount of storage required at a time when businesses face exponential storage growth. Chief benefits of global deduplication include: • Reductions in storage of up to 60% • The most optimal deduplication ratio • Enterprise-wide reach • Massive reductions in backup-related WAN traffic By shrinking storage capacity needs, data deduplication can cut storage costs quickly. At the same time, businesses today need to access and utilize their data in real time, making the most recent and relevant information available. By eliminating redundant data, deduplication technology makes it simpler for data to be managed across various b

Traditional backup systems fail to meet the database protection and recovery requirements of modern organizations. These systems require ever-growing backup windows, negatively impact performance in mission-critical production databases, and deliver recovery time objectives (RTO) and recovery point objectives (RPO) measured in hours or even days, failing to meet the requirements of high-volume, high transactional databases -- potentially costing millions in lost productivity and revenue, regulatory penalties, and reputation damage due to an outage or data loss.
