This document provides a complete reference for the Concept and Object Modeling Notation (COMN, pronounced “common”), release 1.1. The book NoSQL and SQL Data Modeling (Technics Publications, 2016) reflects release 1.0 of COMN. This is a reference, not a tutorial. This document is designed to support a quick check of how to draw or notate something in COMN.

Interactive applications have changed dramatically over the last 15 years. In the late ‘90s, large web companies emerged with dramatic increases in scale on many dimensions: · The number of concurrent users skyrocketed as applications increasingly became accessible · via the web (and later on mobile devices). · The amount of data collected and processed soared as it became easier and increasingly · valuable to capture all kinds of data. · The amount of unstructured or semi-structured data exploded and its use became integral · to the value and richness of applications. Dealing with these issues was more and more difficult using relational database technology. The key reason is that relational databases are essentially architected to run a single machine and use a rigid, schema-based approach to modeling data. Google, Amazon, Facebook, and LinkedIn were among the first companies to discover the serious limitations of relational database technology for supporting these new application requirements. Commercial alternatives didn’t exist, so they invented new data management approaches themselves. Their pioneering work generated tremendous interest because a growing number of companies faced similar problems. Open source NoSQL database projects formed to leverage the work of the pioneers, and commercial companies associated with these projects soon followed. Today, the use of NoSQL technology is rising rapidly among Internet companies and the enterprise. It’s increasingly considered a viable alternative to relational databases, especially as more organizations recognize that operating at scale is more effectively achieved running on clusters of standard, commodity servers, and a schema-less data model is often a better approach for handling the variety and type of data most often captured and processed today.

Everything about data has changed, but that only means that data models are even more essential to understanding that data so that businesses can know what it means. As development methodologies change to incorporate Agile workflows, data architects must adapt to ensure models stay relevant and accurate. This whitepaper describes key requirements for Agile data modeling and shows how ER/Studio supports this methodology.

The demand for using data as an asset has grown to a level where data-centric applications are now the norm in enterprises. Yet data-centric applications fall short of user expectations at a high rate. Part of this is due to inadequate quality assurance. This in turn arises from trying to develop data-centric projects using the old paradigm of the SDLC, which came into existence during an age of process automation. SDLC does not fit with data-centric projects and cannot address the QA needs of these projects. Instead, a new approach is needed where analysts develop business rules to test atomic items of data quality. These rules have to be run in an automated fashion in a business rules engine. Additionally, QA has to be carried past the point of application implementation and support the running of the production environment.

Enterprises are focusing on becoming ever more data-driven, meaning that it is simply unacceptable to allow data to go to waste. Yet, as the amount of data businesses collect and control continues to increase exponentially, many organizations are failing to derive enough business value from their data. Companies are feeling the pressure to extract maximum value from all of their data, both defensive and offensive. Defensive analytics are the “plumbing aspects” of data management that must be captured to mitigate risk and establish a basic understanding of business performance. Offensive analytics build on defensive analytics and support overarching business objectives, strategic initiatives and long-term goals using predictive models. In this whitepaper, you will learn how to address many challenges, including streamlining operational reporting, delivering insight and providing a single, unified platform for everyone.

Organizations maintain data-based assets in hopes of successfully employing them in support of strategy. In an attempt to provide valued products and/or services, a customer relationship management (CRM) strategy should attempt to improve what is known about the wants and needs of existing customers. An organization may desire to transfer its inventory to its suppliers and to only play the role of transaction broker. A third strategy might be to use data to obtain significant efficiencies from productions/operations, ensuring a low cost advantage.

Enterprises use data virtualization software such as TIBCO® Data Virtualization to reduce data bottlenecks so more insights can be delivered for better business outcomes. For developers, data virtualization allows applications to access and use data without needing to know its technical details, such as how it is formatted or where it is physically located. For developers, data virtualization helps rapidly create reusable data services that access and transform data and deliver data analytics with even heavylifting reads completed quickly, securely, and with high performance. These data services can then be coalesced into a common data layer that can support a wide range of analytic and applications use cases. Data engineers and analytics development teams are big data virtualization users, with Gartner predicting over 50% of these teams adopting the technology by 202

Asian ICT infrastructure investment is exploding as businesses review and modernise their data-centre architectures to keep up with the service demands of a growing and increasingly sophisticated population. Demand for cloud services, particularly to support big-data analytics initiatives, is driving this trend. Frost & Sullivan, for example, believes the Asia-Pacific cloud computing market will grow at 28.4 percent annually through 2022. Despite this growth, many businesses are also rapidly realising that public cloud is not the best solution for every need as theydo not always offer the same level of visibility, performance, and control as on-premises infrastructure. This reality is pushing many companies towards the middle ground of hybrid IT, in which applications and infrastructure are distributed across public cloud and self-managed data centre infrastructure. Read about Medical company Mutoh and how it took advantage of the latest technology.

This eBook offers a practical hands-on guide to analyzing and mitigating the risks of migrating to PostgreSQL. With the ongoing shift towards open-source database solutions, it’s no surprise that PostgreSQL is the fastest growing database. While it’s tempting to simply compare the licensing costs of proprietary systems against that of open source, it is both a misleading and incorrect approach when evaluating the potential for return on investment of a database technology migration. A key decision criteria for adopting any technology is whether it can support requirements for existing applications while also fitting into longer term strategies and needs. The first section of this eBook provides a detailed analysis of all aspects of migrating from legacy and commercial solutions to PostgreSQL: ? Schema and code migration ? Data migration ? Application code migration ? Testing and evaluation

The increase of SSL/TLS traffic indicates that organizations are more and more focused on safeguarding the integrity of the data that flows through their Internet-facing applications. However, the concurrent growth of malware hidden within that encrypted traffic is cause for concern. Without visibility into your SSL/TLS traffic, you’ll have some serious blind spots in your security, and these blind spots could lead to financial losses, data breaches, and damage to your corporate reputation. That’s why it’s essential to regain visibility into that encrypted traffic and allow your malware-scanning and prevention devices to protect your apps and your network. The most efficient way to get that visibility is by orchestrating your outbound SSL/TLS traffic. With a robust SSL/TLS orchestration solution, you’ll enjoy better visibility, increased performance, and more flexibility—so you can stop worrying about hidden malware and focus on developing and supporting new apps to drive your business

What's in the white paper? Like all areas of the finance team, the accounts payable department is tasked with working smarter and doing more with less. The challenge is that many organizations are drowning in paper invoices, spreadsheets and manual AP processes. A digital transformation can create more automated workflows, easier tracking of payments, and more overall accountability and visibility. In addition, the data collected can support a more predictable cash flow and a stronger negotiating position with vendors. This white paper will examine AP’s role in reimagining the entire finance process as part of the purchase-to-pay cycle, including: • Avoiding costs of processing paper invoices and payments • The role of the CFO in mitigating risks of manual processes • The value of AP integration with e-payable solutions
