Data centers are large, important investments that, when properly designed, built, and operated, are an integral part of the business strategy driving the success of any enterprise. Yet the central focus of organizations is often the acquisition and deployment of the IT architecture equipment and systems with little thought given to the structure and space in which it is to be housed, serviced, and maintained. This invariably leads to facility infrastructure problems such as thermal “hot spots”, lack of UPS (uninterruptible power supply) rack power, lack of redundancy, system overloading and other issues that threaten or prevent the realization of the return on the investment in the IT systems.

Deduplication is becoming an essential tool to help data center managers control exponential data growth in the backup environment. The methods used to accomplish deduplication vary widely as do the levels of capacity optimization they can provide. Some techniques are well suited to small-to-medium sized backup environments, while others are optimized for larger enterprises. This report describes the various techniques used today to deduplicate data and highlights unique deduplication considerations for enterprise environments.

Managing the Economics of Your Virtualized Data Center The average datacenter is 50% more costly than Amazon Web Services. As cloud economics threaten the long-term viability of on premise data centers, the survival of IT organizations rests solely in the ability to maximize the operational and financial returns of their existing infrastructure. You will survive, and this brand new whitepaper will help you to follow these 4 best practices: - Maximize the efficiency of your virtual data center. - Optimize workload placement within your clusters. - Reclaim unused server capacity. - And show your boss that this saves money.

Intelligent N+X Redundancy, Placement Affinities, & Future Proofing in the Virtualized Data Center Virtualization brought about the ability to simplify business continuity management in IT. Workload portability and data replication capabilities mean that physical infrastructure failures no longer need impact application services, and they can rapidly be recovered even in the event of complete site failure. However, Enterprises and Service Providers face new challenges ensuring they have enough compute capacity in their virtualized data centers to support their business continuity requirements, while at the same time not over provisioning infrastructure capacity resulting in unnecessary capital expenditure.

Cooling tends to take a back seat to other concerns when server rooms and small to mid-size data centers are first built. As computing needs grow, increased heat production can compromise equipment performance and cause shutdowns. Haphazard data center expansion creates cooling inefficiencies that magnify these heat-related problems. Users may assume that they need to increase cooling capacity, but this is expensive and often unnecessary. In most cases, low-cost rack cooling best practices will solve heat-related problems. Best practices optimize airflow, increase efficiency, prevent downtime and reduce costs.

The client had an extensive global multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) network with over 30 Gbps of bandwidth. However, the client was experiencing bandwidth growth of >30% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) and foresaw increasing demands for multi-media applications, data center to data center traffic, and cloud solution usage to support its business units and global workforce. It became crucial for the client to re-architect their current network to support growth and provide a globally consistent user experience at lower cost. With 40% of their WAN traffic being http internet traffic, they needed regional internet service provider (ISP) breakouts. The client needed a lower cost/MB high capacity WAN backbone for better application performance and cloud optimization. Their network needed to be scalable to poise them for anticipated growth and offer improved site connectivity options.

As wattages increase in high-density server applications, providing redundant power becomes more challenging and costly. Traditionally, the most practical solution for distributing redundant power to 208V server racks above 5 kW has been to connect dual 3-phase rack PDUs to dual power supplies in each server. Although this approach is reliable, there is a better way. Tripp Lite has developed a patent-pending high-capacity 3-phase rack ATS specifically designed to deliver efficient, reliable redundant power to high-density clustered server environments. This White Paper will: • Explain the redundancy challenges for high-density server racks • Compare traditional dual PDU and 3-phase rack ATS redundancy setups • Outline the benefits of using a Tripp Lite 3-phase rack ATS

Standardized, scalable, pre-assembled, and integrated data center facility power and cooling modules provide a “total cost of ownership” (TCO) savings of 30% compared to traditional, built-out data center power and cooling infrastructure. Avoiding overbuilt capacity and scaling the design over time contributes to a significant percentage of the overall savings. This white paper provides a quantitative TCO analysis of the two architectures, and illustrates the key drivers of both the capex and opex savings of the improved architecture.
