The Age of Information and the associated growth of the World Wide Web has brought with it a new problem: how to actually make sense of all the information available. The overarching goal of the Semantic Web is to change that. Semantic Web technologies accomplish this goal by providing a universal framework to describe and link data so that it can be better understood and searched holistically, allowing both people and computers to see and discover relationships in the data. Today, organizations are leveraging the power of the Semantic Web to aggregate and link disparate data, improve search navigation, provide holistic search and discovery, dynamically publish content, and complete ETL processes faster. Read this white paper to gain insight into why Semantics is important, understand how Semantics works, and see examples of Semantics in practice.

The demand for using data as an asset has grown to a level where data-centric applications are now the norm in enterprises. Yet data-centric applications fall short of user expectations at a high rate. Part of this is due to inadequate quality assurance. This in turn arises from trying to develop data-centric projects using the old paradigm of the SDLC, which came into existence during an age of process automation. SDLC does not fit with data-centric projects and cannot address the QA needs of these projects. Instead, a new approach is needed where analysts develop business rules to test atomic items of data quality. These rules have to be run in an automated fashion in a business rules engine. Additionally, QA has to be carried past the point of application implementation and support the running of the production environment.

Databases have long served as the lifeline of the business. Therefore, it is no surprise that performance has always been top of mind. Whether it be a traditional row-formatted database to handle millions of transactions a day or a columnar database for advanced analytics to help uncover deep insights about the business, the goal is to service all requests as quickly as possible. This is especially true as organizations look to gain an edge on their competition by analyzing data from their transactional (OLTP) database to make more informed business decisions. The traditional model (see Figure 1) for doing this leverages two separate sets of resources, with an ETL being required to transfer the data from the OLTP database to a data warehouse for analysis. Two obvious problems exist with this implementation. First, I/O bottlenecks can quickly arise because the databases reside on disk and second, analysis is constantly being done on stale data. In-memory databases have helped address p

Advanced persistent threats (APTs) are stealthier and more spiteful than ever. Sophisticated techniques are used to quietly breach organizations and deploy customized malware, which potentially remains undetected for months. Such attacks are caused by cybercriminals who target individual users with highly evasive tools. Legacy security approaches are bypassed to steal sensitive data from credit card details to intellectual property or government secrets. Traditional cybersecurity solutions, such as email spam filters, anti-virus software or firewalls are ineffective against advanced persistent threats. APTs can bypass such solutions and gain hold within a network to make organizations vulnerable to data breaches.

Hadoop is the rising star of the business technology agenda for a simple reason — it disrupts the economics of data, analytics, and someday soon, all enterprise applications; it is secretly becoming an application platform too. Application development and delivery (AD&D) professionals should be aware of and take action on these eight predictions, including the disruptive power of “Hadooponomics,” Hadoop’s current killer app, the closing data management gap, and the emergence of brand new distros.

Businesses can gain greater value from their BI investment by improving the way in which data flows to the BI system are managed. Many problems result when the ETL process is handled by a patchwork of scripting, custom coding, and various built-in schedulers that are part of existing ETL solutions, because these systems do not provide end-to-end execution, monitoring, and control of the ETL process.

To mine raw data and extract crucial insights, business decision‐makers need fast and comprehensive access to all the information stored across their enterprise, regardless of its format or location. Furthermore, that data must be organized, analyzed and visualized in ways that permit easy interpretation of market opportunities growth, shifts and trends and the business‐process changes required to address them. Gaining a true perspective on an organization’s customer base, market area or potential expansion can be a challenging task, because companies use so many relational databases, data warehouse technologies, mapping systems and ad hoc data repositories to gather and house information for a wide variety of specialized purposes.
