The competitive advantages realized from a dependable Business Intelligence and Analytics (BI/A) are well documented. Everything from reduced business costs and increased customer retention to better decision making and the ability to forecast opportunities have been observed outcomes in response to such programs. The implementation of such a program remains a necessity for any growing or mature enterprise. The establishment of a comprehensive BI/A program that includes traditional Descriptive Analytics along with next generation categories such as Predictive or Prescriptive Analytics is indispensable for business success.

Interactive applications have changed dramatically over the last 15 years. In the late ‘90s, large web companies emerged with dramatic increases in scale on many dimensions: · The number of concurrent users skyrocketed as applications increasingly became accessible · via the web (and later on mobile devices). · The amount of data collected and processed soared as it became easier and increasingly · valuable to capture all kinds of data. · The amount of unstructured or semi-structured data exploded and its use became integral · to the value and richness of applications. Dealing with these issues was more and more difficult using relational database technology. The key reason is that relational databases are essentially architected to run a single machine and use a rigid, schema-based approach to modeling data. Google, Amazon, Facebook, and LinkedIn were among the first companies to discover the serious limitations of relational database technology for supporting these new application requirements. Commercial alternatives didn’t exist, so they invented new data management approaches themselves. Their pioneering work generated tremendous interest because a growing number of companies faced similar problems. Open source NoSQL database projects formed to leverage the work of the pioneers, and commercial companies associated with these projects soon followed. Today, the use of NoSQL technology is rising rapidly among Internet companies and the enterprise. It’s increasingly considered a viable alternative to relational databases, especially as more organizations recognize that operating at scale is more effectively achieved running on clusters of standard, commodity servers, and a schema-less data model is often a better approach for handling the variety and type of data most often captured and processed today.

Modern enterprises face increasing pressure to deliver business value through technological innovation that leverages all available data. At the same time, those enterprises need to reduce expenses to stay competitive, deliver results faster to respond to market demands, use real-time analytics so users can make informed decisions, and develop new applications with enhanced developer productivity. All of these factors put big data at the top of the agenda. Unfortunately, the promise of big data has often failed to deliver. With the growing volumes of unstructured and multi-structured data flooding into our data centers, the relational databases that enterprises have relied on for the last 40-years are now too limiting and inflexible. New-generation NoSQL (“Not Only SQL”) databases have gained popularity because they are ideally suited to deal with the volume, velocity, and variety of data that businesses and governments handle today.

Add Big Data Technologies to Get More Value from Your Stack Taking advantage of big data starts with understanding how to optimize and augment your existing infrastructure. Relational databases have endured for a reason – they fit well with the types of data that organizations use to run their business. These types of data in business applications such as ERP, CRM, EPM, etc., are not fundamentally changing, which suggests that relational databases will continue to play a foundational role in enterprise architectures for the foreseeable future. One area where emerging technologies can complement relational database technologies is big data. With the rapidly growing volumes of data, along with the many new sources of data, organizations look for ways to relieve pressure from their existing systems. That’s where Hadoop and NoSQL come in.

Emerging business innovations focused on realizing quick business value on new and growing data sources require “hybrid transactional and analytical processing” (HTAP), the notion of performing analysis on data directly in an operational data store. While this is not a new idea, Gartner reports that the potential for HTAP has not been fully realized due to technology limitations and inertia in IT departments. MemSQL offers a unique combination of performance, flexibility, and ease of use that allows companies to implement HTAP to power their business applications.

The need for fast data applications is growing rapidly, driven by the IoT, the surge in machine-to-machine (M2M) data, global mobile device proliferation, and the monetization of SaaS platforms. So how do you combine real-time, streaming analytics with real-time decisions in an architecture that’s reliable, scalable, and simple? In this report, Ryan Betts and John Hugg from VoltDB examine ways to develop apps for fast data, using pre-defined patterns. These patterns are general enough to suit both the do-it-yourself, hybrid batch/streaming approach, as well as the simpler, proven in-memory approach available with certain fast database offerings.

The world is more connected than ever before, and data relationships only continue to multiply. Yet enterprises still operate largely with an incomplete perspective caused by segmented, non-contextual and disconnected data silos. Connected data is the key to surviving, growing and thriving. However, a transformation across the entire enterprise won’t happen overnight, and each step must be measurable from both a business and technical perspective. Organizations need expert guidance to move more swiftly and avoid costly technical pitfalls in the new paradigm. This paper examines the journey to what we call, “The Connected Enterprise”.

Rewrite the rules of injection molding with 3D Systems thermoplastic additive manufacturing printers and materials. Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) technology is at the heart of a growing trend in mass custom manufacturing as well as functional prototyping. The right additive technologies, materials and finishes are transforming manufacturing. Digital-direct thermoplastic manufacturing offers exceptional quality while opening the door to novel design parameters not possible with injection molding. Thermoplastic additive manufacturing also bypasses the long lead time and up-front investment in injection molding tooling. If you measure your finished parts on the three dimensions: quality, time to market, and cost per cubic inch, in many situations industrial SLS offers a better total value proposition. 3D Systems offers a wide variety of 3D printable thermoplastics, engineered for a range of applications. Customers have grown accustomed to high speeds and reliable connectivity. One second of network delay when accessing website, mobile app, or application service can increase your bounce rate and even decrease your customer’s trust in your brand. The typical business pain points per the above scenario are always like: Latency – While, latency problems caused by geographic distance are impossible to solve on the public Internet; Availability – Packet loss and complaints from customers can prevent you from increasing your user base; Cost - The growth of your user base and your business needs both outpace your IT budget. Security - Connections over the public Internet are vulnerable to DDoS attacks and other threats. This whitepaper describes: • Challenges that Magic Video faced before implementing Alibaba Cloud’s solutions • How Alibaba Cloud’s solutions help Magic Video build a global hybrid enterprise network, accelerate content delivery of the application, and maximize bandwidth?

Australian businesses have long been recognised as leaders in the adoption of cloud services and the migration of core infrastructure to cloud platforms. Yet as ambitious ‘cloud-first’ programs are executed, performance and complexity issues have led many organisations to embrace the middle ground – a hybrid IT solution combining public cloud and on-premises infrastructure. Fast-growing hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) platforms are increasingly being recognised as an ideal enabler for this strategy, with a software-based design that combines robust computing infrastructure with a high degree of centralisation, integration, flexibility, and analytics-based monitoring and manageability. Read how companies such as Beam Suntory have redefined enterprise architecture and learn more about the way an integrated hyperconverged infrastructure can help you build the right infrastructure for the future.

Asian ICT infrastructure investment is exploding as businesses review and modernise their data-centre architectures to keep up with the service demands of a growing and increasingly sophisticated population. Demand for cloud services, particularly to support big-data analytics initiatives, is driving this trend. Frost & Sullivan, for example, believes the Asia-Pacific cloud computing market will grow at 28.4 percent annually through 2022. Despite this growth, many businesses are also rapidly realising that public cloud is not the best solution for every need as theydo not always offer the same level of visibility, performance, and control as on-premises infrastructure. This reality is pushing many companies towards the middle ground of hybrid IT, in which applications and infrastructure are distributed across public cloud and self-managed data centre infrastructure.
