Modern enterprises face increasing pressure to deliver business value through technological innovation that leverages all available data. At the same time, those enterprises need to reduce expenses to stay competitive, deliver results faster to respond to market demands, use real-time analytics so users can make informed decisions, and develop new applications with enhanced developer productivity. All of these factors put big data at the top of the agenda. Unfortunately, the promise of big data has often failed to deliver. With the growing volumes of unstructured and multi-structured data flooding into our data centers, the relational databases that enterprises have relied on for the last 40-years are now too limiting and inflexible. New-generation NoSQL (“Not Only SQL”) databases have gained popularity because they are ideally suited to deal with the volume, velocity, and variety of data that businesses and governments handle today.

Data governance is a lifecycle-centric asset management activity. To understand and realize the value of data assets, it is necessary to capture information about them (their metadata) in the connected way. Capturing the meaning and context of diverse enterprise data in connection to all assets in the enterprise ecosystem is foundational to effective data governance. Therefore, a data governance environment must represent assets and their role in the enterprise using an open, extensible and “smart” approach. Knowledge graphs are the most viable and powerful way to do this. This short paper outlines how knowledge graphs are flexible, evolvable, semantic and intelligent. It is these characteristics that enable them to: • capture the description of data as an interconnected set of information that meaningfully bridges enterprise metadata silos. • deliver integrated data governance by addressing all three aspects of data governance — Executive Governance, Representative Governance, and App

How do you get a machine learning system to deliver value from big data? Turns out that 90% of the effort required for success in machine learning is not the algorithm or the model or the learning - it's the logistics. Ted Dunning and Ellen Friedman identify what matters in machine learning logistics, what challenges arise, especially in a production setting, and they introduce an innovative solution: the rendezvous architecture. This new design for model management is based on a streaming approach in a microservices style. Rendezvous addresses the need to preserve and share raw data, to do effective model-to-model comparisons and to have new models on standby, ready for a hot hand-off when a production model needs to be replaced.

With future business intelligence solutions clearly evolving from data that comes from highly efficient and well behaved systems, to data that comes from the extended enterprise where data is not necessarily so well structured and behaved - Organizations are forced into a more collaborative mode of operation with their core infrastructure being adapted from the consumer space, and to the extent possible, conformed to their existing repositories. This whitepaper attempts to address various challenges consumers face while managing enormous data sets within the context of this complex scenario. Further, we’ll try to answer the question: Is Big Data Governance really that different from traditional data governance initiatives? Finally, we’ll see how AnalytiX™ Mapping Manager™ can help organizations accelerate the development and deployment of a successful Big Data/ Business Intelligence platform and accelerate delivery of all sorts of data – structured, semi-structured as well as unstruc

The future of Master Data Management is deriving value from data relationships which reveal more data stories that become more and more important to competitive advantage as we enter into the future of data and business analytics. MDM will be about supplying consistent, meaningful views of master data and being able to unify data into one location, especially to optimize for query performance and data fit. Graph databases offer exactly that type of data/performance fit. Use data relationships to unlock real business value in MDM: - Graphs can easily model both hierarchical and non-hierarchical master data - The logical model IS the physical model making it easier for business users to visualize data relationships - Deliver insights in real-time from data relationships in your master data - Stay ahead of the business with faster development Download and read the white paper Your Master Data Is a Graph: Are You Ready? to learn why your master data is a graph and how graph databases like Neo4j are the best technologies for MDM.

This paper argues a case for the use of coarse grained reconfigurable array (CGRA) architectures for the efficient acceleration of the data flow computations used in deep neural network training and inferencing. The paper discusses the problems with other parallel acceleration systems such as massively parallel processor arrays (MPPAs) and heterogeneous systems based on CUDA and OpenCL, and proposes that CGRAs with autonomous computing features deliver improved performance and computational efficiency. The machine learning compute appliance that Wave Computing is developing executes data flow graphs using multiple clock-less, CGRA-based System on Chips (SoCs) each containing 16,000 processing elements (PEs). This paper describes the tools needed for efficient compilation of data flow graphs to the CGRA architecture, and outlines Wave Computing’s WaveFlow software (SW) framework for the online mapping of models from popular workflows like Tensorflow, MXNet and Caffe.

The bar for success is rising in higher education.  University leaders and IT administrators are aware of the compelling benefits of digital transformation overall—and artificial intelligence (AI) in particular. AI can amplify human capabilities by using machine learning, or deep learning, to convert the fast-growing and plentiful sources of data about all aspects of a university into actionable insights that drive better decisions. But when planning a transformational strategy, these leaders must prioritize operational continuity. It’s critical to protect the everyday activities of learning, research, and administration that rely on the IT infrastructure to consistently deliver data to its applications.

The media and entertainment industry was valued at $1.81 trillion in 2016, and is expected to reach $2.14 trillion by 2020. Activities within this industry have grown over the last couple of years, and now range from creating content for movies, TV and games, to delivering that content. This is increasingly performed via on-demand data networks rather than traditional over-the-air broadcasting, watched over high resolution displays that enhance the overall viewing experience of the user, and even the latter is being delivered from the same storage repositories. Media production is also now prevalent in areas not traditionally associated with this activity, such as training, museums, and education.
