This document provides a complete reference for the Concept and Object Modeling Notation (COMN, pronounced “common”), release 1.1. The book NoSQL and SQL Data Modeling (Technics Publications, 2016) reflects release 1.0 of COMN. This is a reference, not a tutorial. This document is designed to support a quick check of how to draw or notate something in COMN.

Metadata defines the structure of data in files and databases, providing detailed information about entities and objects. In this white paper, Dr. Robin Bloor and Rebecca Jowiak of The Bloor Group discuss the value of metadata and the importance of organizing it well, which enables you to: - Collaborate on metadata across your organization - Manage disparate data sources and definitions - Establish an enterprise glossary of business definitions and data elements - Improve communication between teams

This whitepaper defines provides a brief technical overview of ACID support in Aerospike. It includes a definition of ACID (Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, Durability), and an overview of the CAP Theorem, which postulates that only two of the three properties of consistency, availability, and partition tolerance can be guaranteed in a distributed system at a specific time. Although Aerospike is an AP system with a proven track record of 100% uptime, this paper describes Aerospike's unique approach to avoiding network partitioning to also ensure high consistency. In addition, the paper describes how Aerospike will give users the option to support a CP configuration with complete consistency in the presence of networking partitioning by reducing availability.

The age of Big Data is upon us. Storage costs are going down, and data analytics is becoming more capable and more user-friendly. Even your auto mechanic will be storing a petabyte of data soon. Big Data will give businesses new insights and help improve operations. With these new tools come questions about how to use them. But your mechanic knows more about fixing a transmission than developing a Hadoop cluster, and similar concerns hold true for larger enterprises. Businesses everywhere are looking for guidance.

The Internet of Things (IoT) or the Internet of Everything is changing the way companies interact with their customers and manage their data. These connected devices generate high volume time series data that can be created in milliseconds. This fast growth of IoT data and other time series data is producing challenges for enterprise applications where data must be collected, saved, and analyzed in the blink of an eye. Your application needs a database built to uniquely handle time series data to ensure your data is continuously available and accurate.Learn about the only NoSQL database optimized for IoT and Time Series data in this technical overview. Riak TS stores and analyzes massive amounts of data and is designed to be faster than Cassandra.

Increasing dependence on enterprise-class applications has created a demand for centralizing organizational data using techniques such as Master Data Management (MDM). The development of a useful MDM environment is often complicated by a lack of shared organizational information and data modeling. In this paper, David Loshin explores some of the root causes that have influenced an organization’s development of a variety of data models, how that organic development has introduced potential inconsistency in structure and semantics, and how those inconsistencies complicate master data integration.

By adding structure to free text using text analytics and graph databases, text becomes valuable business data. This paper examines a real life use case in risk analysis. Text is a part of all communication channels from social media, documents, logs, and data bases. In order to use the information from text, you need to extract the data in a way that provides useful information on entities, locations, organizations, and their properties. Graph databases are very powerful in showing the text relationships including the nearest neighbors, clusters, and the shortest paths. The combination of text analytics and graph databases can be used to solve business problems.

The world is more connected than ever before, and data relationships only continue to multiply. Yet enterprises still operate largely with an incomplete perspective caused by segmented, non-contextual and disconnected data silos. Connected data is the key to surviving, growing and thriving. However, a transformation across the entire enterprise won’t happen overnight, and each step must be measurable from both a business and technical perspective. Organizations need expert guidance to move more swiftly and avoid costly technical pitfalls in the new paradigm. This paper examines the journey to what we call, “The Connected Enterprise”.

Graph databases are about to catapult across the famous technology adoption chasm and land in start-ups, enterprises and government agencies across the globe. The adoption antibodies are subsiding as the power of natively connected data becomes fundamental to any organization looking for data-driven insights across operations, suppliers, and customers. Moore’s Law increases in storage capacity and processing power can no longer keep up with the pace of data expansion, yet how companies structure and analyze their data ultimately will impact their ability to compete. Unstructured, disconnected data is useless. Graph databases will rapidly jump from niche use cases to a transformative IT technology as they enable turning the data you collect into actionable insights. Data will become the single most differentiating asset for your organization.

NoSQL database management systems give us the opportunity to store our data according to more than one data storage model, but our entity-relationship data modeling notations are stuck in SQL land. Is there any need to model schema-less databases, and is it even possible? In this short white paper, Ted Hills examines these questions in light of a recent paper from MarkLogic on the hybrid data model. Ted Hills has been active in the Information Technology industry since 1975. At LexisNexis, Ted co-leads the work of establishing enterprise data architecture standards and governance processes, working with data models and business and data definitions for both structured and unstructured data. His book, NoSQL and SQL Data Modeling, was recently released by Technics Publications (http://technicspub.com).

In a perfect world, downtime would be a thing of the past, however, as organizations continue their digital transformation journeys, more data assets are being created—generating, in turn, higher availability demands. Delivering on availability service levels is not just a technical responsibility, but also a business imperative extending well beyond IT. The consequences of failing to meet service levels can be dire and costly. Read this white paper to learn how the right tools can minimize downtime.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the new legal framework that will come into effect on the 25th of May 2018 in the European Union. EU regulations have direct effect in all EU member states, meaning the GDPR replaces the current Data Protection Directive and applies to all EU member states. The GDPR’s focus is the protection of personal data. In fact, GDPR is one of the biggest shakeups ever seen affecting how data relating to an individual should be handled—and it affects not just companies but any individual, corporation, public authority, agency or other body that processes the personal data of individuals based in the EU. As gatekeepers and processors of personal data, HR and People teams have a crucial role to play in preparing for this step change. The rules on how data is kept and used will become much more stringent, and it’s vital that HR and People teams become more transparent, communicating to employees exactly how their data is processed. In a world wh

Many businesses are adopting a multi-cloud infrastructure. However, managing data and communication between multiple cloud environments is often challenging and complex. Therefore, companies often try to find a technical partner that can help them. Companies with on-premise data centers need some type of interconnect to access their products and services hosted on the cloud. The traditional Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection method usually can’t meet enterprise speed, stability, security, and compliance requirements. This whitepaper describes the challenges that companies face when building dedicated connections between different cloud environments and how Alibaba Cloud’s Express Connect is the perfect solution for them

For Japan’s largest medical equipment wholesaler, Mutoh, ensuring its 300,000 products reach hospitals, clinics and health-centres on time is an imperative. Someone’s life depends on it. Without IT that wouldn’t be possible. But Mutoh’s IT infrastructure was unable to keep pace with the demands of the business. Every time an order came in, Mutoh had to pull data from different systems across multiple servers which was time-consuming. It needed an IT infrastructure that was fast, high-performing, reliable, stable, and flexible. Mutoh turned to Lenovo’s hyperconverged infrastructure that helped the company achieve: • The ability to seamlessly extract data from different systems across multiple physical servers helped Mutoh respond to customer orders as quickly as possible, thereby saving lives • A modular hyperconverged solution allowed Mutoh to invest on a need basis, improving ROI and addressing spikes in customer demand
