There are actually many elements of such a vision that are working together. ACID and NoSQL are not the antagonists they were once thought to be; NoSQL works well under a BASE model, but also some of the innovative NoSQL systems fully conform to ACID requirements. Database engineers have puzzled out how to get non-relational systems to work within an environment that demands high availability, scalability, with differing levels of recovery and partition tolerance. BASE is still a leading innovation that is wedded to the NoSQL model, and the evolution of both together is harmonious. But that doesn’t mean they always have to be in partnership; there are several options. So while the opening anecdote is true in many cases, organizations that need more diverse possibilities can move into the commercial arena and get the specific option that works best for them. One of the biggest challenges in a data management initiative is aligning different and sometimes competing organizations to work towards the same long-term vision. It is very difficult to execute a data management program all at once, or as a “big bang” approach. Rather, the program should be deployed in phases over time, starting in one area and incrementally building out and adding value to the rest of the organization over time.

Master data management (MDM) is about people and process; it is not about technology. Implementing MDM technology alone will not address operational and business process challenges. Rather, “mastering” data involves people taking action through established data policies and processes. Data Governance ensures that data in the MDM hub is of high quality and can be trusted by business users. Lacking Data Governance, organizations do not have consistent data definitions or know what constitutes a data problem, who is accountable, what decisions need to be made, or how to escalate and resolve issues.

Most of the public and its public safety professionals live and work in a digital world of mobile devices, instant connectivity, and geo-location. This one powerful fact is changing the way police and first responders react to incidents and interact with the communities they serve. Types and severity of incidents are also changing, due in part to socio-cultural and environmental factors. Complicated risk scenarios requiring inter-agency coordination are occurring in both urban areas and once-sleepy suburban towns. To perform in this volatile new reality, public safety is undergoing a digital transformation focusing more on predictive and preventive practices.1 With the help of advanced technologies, citizens and trusted partners, agencies are: Intel, the Intel logo, Intel Core, Intel vPro, Core Inside and vPro Inside are trademarks of Intel Corporation or its subsidiaries in the U.S. and/or other countries.
